Birds
Numerous bird surveys have been undertaken in the BMNP over the years. Most recently, a study was undertaken by Anteneh Shimeles of the Ethiopian Wildlife and Natural History Society and Addisu Assefa of the BMNP of the resident birds in the Harenna forest. Its objectives were to i) assess and explain patterns in species diversity and abundance; ii) determine indicator species that are useful for bird diversity monitoring; and iii) develop a forest bird monitoring protocol. Anteneh Shimeles is also undertaken PhD research (Addis Ababa University) on the raptor communities in the BMNP, including i) raptor diversity and abundance; ii) raptor diet and foraging patterns and iii) abundance and distribution of the main prey, including rodents, small mammals and passerines.
